Duties of the Post

The position of the Senior House Officer in Orthopaedics at Croydon University Hospital involves mainly general Orthopaedics and Traumatic Surgery. Trauma inevitably forms a high percentage of the work load as a high proportion of the patients admitted are emergencies.

Duties of the Senior House Officer include attendance at operating sessions, out-patient and fracture clinics. S/he will clerk all new Trauma Admissions, some of the routine or “cold” admissions and attend ward rounds with Consultant and also with Registrar.

There is an active Medical Centre at Croydon University Hospital, which holds regular fortnightly meetings and, in addition, weekly meetings specially designed for junior staff of all disciplines. No specific research programme is planned but there is a vast wealth of clinical material available for clinical research.

The Duty Rota

The Senior House Officer rota is a full shift rota with 8 SHOs participating. Annual Leave is rostered into the shift and usually taken a week after A&E Nights.

The Trust is at present reviewing the work pattern and rest periods in line with the requirements of the European Working Time Directive.

There will be dedicated on-call Bleeps that you will need to collect from Switchboard when you are On Call in A&E Days/Night. This will enable the Switchboard Operators and Nursing staff to bleep the correct Doctor.

Study Leave
